e t ’s g e t t h i s p a r t y started! It’s not a backyard summer bash without the barbecue. The strike of the match or punch of the igniter is followed by intensely intoxicating aromas of fire, smoke, meat caramelizing, veggies searing, fish crackling, tummies rumbling and smiles widening. The air is warm and the sun is slowly dropping. There’s a clanging of dishes inside as salads are being mixed and drinks poured. Laughter and conversations between friends and strangers fill any empty space, along with the squeals of children running about, some splashing in a nearby pool or lake. Life is good and love is in the air. In these times I adore everything: food, drink, the weather, the smell of the air, friends, family, even the staring dog who steals food when everyone is too busy living in the moment to notice…or care. Summer is in full swing and we must slow down to savor the long days we’re living; soon enough the sunlight will retreat to a “Barbecue shorter workweek and we’ll be longing for hot-off-the-grill corn on the cob, music festivals and swimsuits…well maybe not swimsuits, may not be the but you get the gist. So while we can, let’s celebrate! road to world Speaking of celebrations, this month, hundreds of local people and places have reason to put on their party hats. Drum roll peace, but please…this month we announce the Style Readers’ Choice winit’s a start.”— ners for local “people and places.” Check out the list of favorite Anthony folks and destinations—from medical professionals and fitness experts to bartenders, wineries, art galleries and more—that our Bourdain region has to offer, and give congrats to all of the winners! Check back in September for “round two” of our annual Readers’ Choice Awards to see the area’s favorite “local businesses.” Until next month, slip another shrimp on the barbie, soak up your bountiful surroundings and raise a glass to winning. — Desiree

What is your favorite 4th of July tradition? “We love to get together for food, drink and to watch the fireworks—it’s just a great chance to take a moment and chill…and enjoy some yummy adult beverages! Last year, we had a fab DIY photo booth too!”

“Mutton Busting at the Folsom Pro Rodeo! Cutest and toughest little 5-year-olds ever!”

“Growing up we always made homemade vanilla ice cream on our porch in a 10-gallon bucket with ice and salt—the old fashioned way! The best part was topping a bowl off with scratch-made hot fudge sauce.”

asktheexperts Q:

When do I need to visit a medical specialist versus a primary care physician?

A: A primary care provider sees patients for everyday health and preventive care and is your family doctor who usually specializes in internal medicine, family medicine or pediatrics. They understand the “big picture” of your health and handle referrals to specialists. A specialist is a doctor who practices a particular type of medicine like ophthalmology, endocrinology or gastroenterology, among many other medical specialties. Some specialty appointments require a referral from your primary care physician while others can get a self-referral. Check with your insurance plan to find out which services you are eligible to receive without prior authorization. —Michael Crandell, Executive Director Mercy Medical Group (a service of Dignity Health Medical Foundation) 1730 Prairie City Road, Folsom 916-351-4800, mymercymedicalgroup.org

Q:

What kind of workout would you recommend to improve core strength?

A:

The core includes a variety of muscles that stabilize the spine and pelvis, and run the entire length of the torso. A “toned six-pack” is only a small part of the core, so when considering a workout to improve core strength, exercises must be geared to strengthen the entire torso.

Q: What comes to you naturally? A: Anything artistic. Q: What’s your biggest pet peeve? A: Sounds people make when they’re chewing/eating. Q: Are you high or low maintenance? A: In between, but my parents may disagree. Q: Biggest life inspirations? A: Mallory Rajan. She owns The French Confection Co. in Burbank, and I interned for her last summer. E

l Dorado Hills resident Anisha Belgal may only be 16, but she’s already an accomplished pastry chef with her own online business: Frosted Creations (facebook.com/frostedcreationsbyanisha). She hopes to one day open a bakery—after college, of course. When Anisha began helping out in the kitchen as a third grader, her family discovered her talent. “She insisted on doing everything herself,” recalls Anisha’s mother. “She was always independent from a very young age.” Even now, Anisha remains a self-taught pastry chef—spending hours on the Internet looking up recipes and watching YouTube tutorials. And, like most teenagers, she also watches her fair 18 stylefedh.com - July 2016

share of TV, although she’s more likely to be found tuning into The Food Network than MTV. “Chopped is my favorite show,” Anisha enthuses, adding, “and I love Cake Boss.” The high schooler also does what she can to make a difference in the community and frequently donates her creations to Hands4Hope (hands4hopeyouth.org), a nonprofit youth empowerment organization. She also lends a helping hand with her mother at Fat Kitty City, a fund dedicated to ending animal suffering. “I think it’s good for teenagers to get out and do something helpful,” Anisha shares. “It’s important for us to give back.” — Amber Foster

he Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary is constructing a 3,400-square-foot barn, which will serve as the centerpiece for their new Barnyard Experience. Though the structure will be a new addition to the Zoo grounds, it will also serve as a link to Folsom’s history. Materials salvaged from a barn that once served the working Russell Ranch, which eventually became Folsom’s Empire Ranch Concept Level Site Plan neighborhood, are being incorporated into the interior of the barn. A winding, ADA-compliant path will bring visitors to the Barnyard Experience from the wolf exhibit patio uphill through the oaks and adjacent animal pasture to the barn terrace. The barn will include six stalls, restrooms, an indoor beehive and display, along with demonstration areas. The adjacent outdoor area will feature interpretive recreation and education stations (animal grooming, feed sorting, milking cows, etc.) Construction is being funded through a combination of a Housing Related Parks (HRP) program grant, a significant donation from the Friends of the Folsom Zoo, and the Zoo Trust. The Barnyard Experience will expand the Zoo’s ability to promote its mission of teaching responsible behavior toward all animals, as visitors will be able to closely interact with a variety of animals and participate in recreational and educational activities that align with the Zoo’s values. Completion is expected for this fall. — Roberta Ratcliff SERVICE ACCESS

G

one are the days of harboring that bitter aftertaste of guilt after a post-workout munch with newly opened Get It Now Foods’ delicious but nutritious menu, which offers a fresh and zesty twist to your favorite everyday meals. Delivering a diverse selection of healthy entrées, from freshly chopped grape tomato salad and mouthwatering soup to a zingy lemon salmon, and black bean veggie burger, I was naturally allured by the most distinctive item on the menu—the Team Bowl. Just imagine it: six ounces of succulently seasoned chicken breast topped with a perfectly cooked egg over easy, sliced garden-fresh jalapeños, crisp cilantro and drizzled Sriracha sauce—all resting on a bed of luscious white rice. Without hesitation, I took advantage of the café’s unique poolside feature and basked in the sun’s rays, all while delighting my taste buds with an ambrosia-like Strawberry Kombucha. Over time, the ice plant became so successful that it actually helped contribute to the boom in California’s fruit growing industry, with the ice allowing the fruit to be transported in larger quantities, and much farther across the country than had been possible before.

Here’s a tip about TAP: If you want to be there on August 5, get a ticket now. TAP Folsom is only in its third year, but this event sells out well ahead of time. “TAP Folsom sells out because it’s the start of a perfect Friday night in Historic Folsom,” says Mary Ann McAlea, senior vice president for the Folsom Chamber. “Guests can stay after the brew fest and visit some of their favorite local restaurants or night scenes. This year, we are adding more breweries to the venue to keep wait times short and give guests a chance to check out some of the new, popular choices.” A variety of food trucks like Bacon Mania and Krush Burger are sure to help soak up the brew; there will also be live music from Take Out, Sacramento’s favorite pop cover band; and pre-events at local establishments will help showcase the restaurants that serve craft beer favorites every day. As for the chosen winners among the 25-plus breweries on tap? “Favorites change quickly, as the craft beer scene continues to grow,” says McAlea. “In last year’s lineup, Deschutes Brewery, Knee Deep Brewery, St Archer and 21st Amendment were all hot spots, as well as our local favorites, Lockdown and Mraz.” For more info, visit tapfolsom.com. • 26 stylefedh.com - July 2016

May 19 / Murer House and Learning Center, Folsom

May 14 / El Dorado Hills Community Services District Gym

Guests of this fourth annual tea and fashion show, organized by the Murer House and Learning Center, were dressed to the nines in period attire reflecting the postEdwardian era of the ever-popular historical drama Downton Abbey. Between ticket sales, raffle drawings, a silent auction and a photo booth, fund-raising efforts—to maintain and operate the historic Giuseppe Murer House—totaled around $4,500.

At this third annual event, over 300 attendees celebrated seven years of All About Equine’s efforts in horse rescue and other equine-related programs with a barbecue. Spirits were high and the mood festive as guests enjoyed delicious food and competitive bidding—all while supporting animals in need. This year’s fund-raiser was the nonprofit’s biggest and most successful yet.

The Assistance League of Sierra Foothills’ seventh annual Gardens of the Hills Tour unlocked the gates to five unique hillside sanctuaries and granted the 1,000-plus attendees’ access to the Sherwood Demonstration Garden, featuring 16 gardens. Her work is showcased on her website, at her home gallery, and in Scottsdale, Arizona’s Xanadu Gallery. “I believe that every painting I create is meant for someone in particular, even when I don’t know who that person is,” shares Briggs. “I think of them as I paint—I’m excited for them and imagine their smiles when they find or receive it—and that makes me smile.”

HLB: Describe the story-within-astory that you create? JB: I love telling a story with my art. I hope I encourage viewers to either superimpose their own memories into the picture or speculate about the characters and use their imaginations to decide for themselves what the story is. I like to attract [people] with the focal point and then encourage them to stroll around and see what else is going on.

HLB: Elaborate on your “color of the air” technique you’ve taught in workshops.

The Pro

JB: I show my students how to use color to create an atmosphere that ties the whole piece together. They create a ground color of their choice, which determines the hues, tones and values for the entire painting and connects the different elements into one piece.

HLB: What led you to pick up a paintbrush? JB: When I was a youngster, I liked to paint but didn’t know I loved it. As an adult, I became an expert quilter—with appliqué work being my favorite type of quilting—and decided to take a drawing class, [so I could] learn to draw my own patterns. It was in this class (with pastels) that I realized I loved to paint and wanted to paint in oils.

HLB: What allure do living creatures as subjects have for you? JB: I’m fascinated by creatures of all kinds, whether human, animal or bird—we’re all special in our own way—each an individual. I study the anatomy, musculature and skeletal structure of my subjects, as well as their behavioral traits. Wildlife [is especially captivating], as they don’t worry about how they look or what others think; people are more complicated, and so very interesting!

HLB: Do you have any favorite

Her Own Little World

spots for inspiration? JB: The wetland walking trails we have in Folsom are fabulous, with a variety of birds and animals. Early spring has great opportunities for taking photographs, with the vernal pools attracting large birds like egrets. Lately I’ve been [asked to go to] local ranches and photograph the working activities, thus leading to the creation of several paintings. I love the friendly, neighborly, family atmosphere at these events.

HLB: What’s the best artistic advice you’ve gotten? JB: Early in my career I studied with Ric Leandro, who’d studied in Europe with some of the masters. He taught me that I should learn all I can and use what I want, but paint like myself and not like anyone else—thereby developing my own personal style.

health&wellness What is it? Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is blood plasma that has been enriched with platelets. In of itself, blood (plasma) contains small, solid components— mainly red cells, white cells and platelets. Very important in the healing of injuries, hundreds of proteins called “growth factors” make up a person’s platelets. PRP is plasma with platelets added to it, so it has more platelets than blood alone. The

platelet-rich plasma Blood Can Heal by Janet Scherr

concentration of platelets—and, thereby, the concentration of growth factors—are five to 10 times greater (or richer) in PRP than in blood. PRP is developed for a patient from his or her own blood. The blood is drawn, the platelets are separated from other blood cells, and their concentration is increased during a spinning process; then the increased concentration of platelets is combined with the remaining blood to create a solution of platelet-rich plasma.

Why is it useful? PRP promotes tissue healing and regeneration. The increased concentration of growth factors in PRP can speed up the healing process of a damaged part of the body such as a torn ligament, tendon or meniscus. Dr. Michele Raithel, ND, at Revolutions Naturopathic explains that PRP works in the opposite way of a cortisone injection, an anti-inflammatory steroid that is administered for pain relief. Unlike cortisone, PRP not only helps to relieve pain, but it also stimulates the inflammatory response that triggers healing. “With PRP-injection therapy, I use ultrasound guidance for the placement,” 38 stylefedh.com - July 2016

Dr. Raithel says. “This allows me to fill the damaged area very specifically with exactly the right amount of PRP, which creates a sweet spot of healthy inflammation. PRP therapy is excellent for chronic pain and injuries that are not healing.”

What conditions does it treat? Dr. Raithel has successfully treated many patients—including athletes of all ages— with PRP injections. “Patients suffering from sports-induced, painful conditions such as tennis elbow, torn ligaments, meniscus tears and rotator cuff injuries can benefit greatly,” she says. “The PRP injections deliver high concentrations of the nutrients and cells used in the repair process of the injured site directly. It’s simple, effective and inexpensive when compared to surgery.”

While PRP has been used for a number of years in sports medicine, it also holds great promise for treating people with many types of spine and joint disorders. Gary Dunaye, PA, a pain management specialist at Cascade Medical Wellness Center, believes PRP will be used more extensively for reversal of chronic pain. “One of the most innovative and exciting ways that PRP is being utilized today is in the treatment of spinal arthritis and associated degenerative disc or joint disease,” says Dunaye. “PRP is a non-surgical treatment that is a relatively new option for relieving and even reversing pain for sufferers of these conditions.” Overall, the success of PRP therapy is still being measured; those considering treatment with PRP should check its eligibility with their health insurance carriers as well as their personal viability with their doctor.

Because their mission is to send the horses to people who will keep them forever, they rely on an extensive adoption process. Unadoptable horses are rare. “There’s a place for every horse,” Fulton says. “Not everyone wants or needs to adopt a championship riding horse; many people want a horse out in front of their house [or] in their pasture, and are willing to offer them love and care for the rest of their days.” Since the organization began, 120 horses of all training levels have found loving homes. “We’ve adopted out horses that can barely be haltered and horses that make wonderful pasture pets and can play with the grandchildren,” says Fulton. Volunteers work shifts, feeding and grooming the horses, giving them medication and mucking their stalls. bathroom overhaul 4 Dos and Don’ts by Kerrie L. Kelly, ASID

42 stylefedh.com - July 2016

T

he latest trend in interior design has us completely rethinking the bathroom. Now that more and more families are looking to make investments and buy a home they want to grow old in, the way we design each room has become more thoughtful and intentional. A concept called livable design has taken over the interior design and architectural worlds, leading us to new and advanced means of decorating and configuring a space. Here are our top dos and don’ts in bathroom design, ultimately ensuring your space is a little more livable.

1 / DO Make Everything Accessible Whether you’re designing the space for yourself, your children or your parents, it’s always important to make every section of the bathroom super accessible. We love floating vanities or those with plenty of space underneath for wheelchair accessibility, or when a little one needs to use a stool to reach her toothbrush. Your vanity should also be accessible from all angles and incorporate designs that make it both aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. Our go-tos? D-shaped handles and durable surfaces, for easy clean-ups paired with low-maintenance design.

Inset photo courtesy of Robern. Larger photo © bmak/fotolia. com. Head shot of Kerrie by Donte Fontana.

homedesign

2 / DON’T Keep Storage Out of Reach This is a big one. Storage should be at the height of everyone in the home, including children and older family members. Vertical cabinets are best for stowing items that everyone should be able to access, like towels, first-aid kits and toiletries. Keep medicine stowed a little higher, or one step further, in a locked storage compartment. To create a luxe and livable vibe, mix different types of storage—think floating shelves, medicine cabinets and adjustable-height storage—to add visual interest without compromising accessibility.

3 / DO Add Plenty of Light One of our favorite ways to transform a bathroom is through lighting. By layering different types of lighting throughout, you can create a space that is both beautiful and functional. Built-in lighting in a vanity is helpful for morning and nighttime rituals, as well as for those with aging eyes and smaller children getting ready in the morning; while overhead lighting is key for illuminating the space to prevent spills and falls, and accent lighting helps round out the look with beautiful luminescence.

4 / DON’T Skimp on the Details While you may not think to add grab bars in the bathtub or zero-threshold in the bathroom entry, you will thank yourself in 20 years. When redesigning or updating your bathroom, we recommend thinking long-term. What are features that you would like to have in your space when you have children? What about when you’re retiring? Design elements like curbless showers and accessible sinks might not seem important now, but they can be a matter of livability down the road. Other design details to think about? Paint that’s easy to clean and can withstand fluxing temperatures, fixtures that won’t rust and surfaces that offer durability and low-maintenance, no matter the mess.

I would like to thank everyone for their vote for #1 Favorite Eye Doctor! I have always liked to help people and from an early age, I always found ways to help and care for others. Today, my focus is eyes. I love to help my patients see clearly so they can fully engage in their lives, the people that they care about and the things they love to do. I enjoy connecting with my patients, building relationships and meeting their individualized vision needs. I want my patients to look good and see better. I don’t have to convince you that vision is one of the most important senses; one gaze into your loved one’s eyes, a breathtaking view of a beautiful landscape or the experience that comes with reading a good book– all help to convey the joys in life that we experience through vision. Regular eye exams are important to maintain healthy eyes and vision. I do more than just determine your prescription for glasses or contacts, but I check for eye conditions and evaluate your eye for signs of chronic systemic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure. My job is to carefully test all aspects of your vision and help preserve your vision for life.

Hisui Sushi All You Can Eat and More by Lorn Randall // photos by Dante Fontana

Hisui Special Roll

72 stylefedh.com - July 2016

W

hen I was first asked to review an allyou-can-eat (AYCE) sushi restaurant, I wasn’t exactly excited about the prospect. Visions of hours-old California Rolls under a sneeze-guard danced in my head. But from the minute I walked into owner Michael Liu’s newest Hisui Sushi restaurant, my fears were replaced with giddy anticipation. The restaurant is new, clean and contemporary. A tasteful mural featuring Hisui’s logo (pronounced HEE-SUU-EE, whichtranslated means jade, according to Google) adorns one wall, while a trio of talented sushi chefs man the crudo bar at the back. No buffet table in sight thankfully, but that doesn’t mean diners can’t order to their stomach’s content from the AYCE lunch menu (Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.) and get it delivered to their table, without having to battle for position in a buffet line. Upon being seated, my server immediately brought a bowl of chilled edamame, a nice surprise while I perused the offerings. Opting to order from their main menu, I started with Ebi Sunomono, sliced cucumbers topped with wakame salad and chilled shrimp in sweet vinaigrette that was as refreshing as it was delicious. It was also a portent of the flavorful and artistic dishes that were to follow. Next up was Ika Sugata, a miso marinated, chargrilled calamari that was sliced and reassembled from tail to tentacles, resulting in not only stunning presentation, but a perfectly cooked dish, too, thanks to the charred, grill flavor mingling expertly with a hint of miso sweetness. Having spent a summer in Oahu, I’ve become a fan of all things poké. Reminiscing, I had no choice but to try Hisui’s. Again I was presented with a beautifully plated rendition of my Hawaiian favorite, featuring thinly sliced cucumber shingled, and topped with raw tuna and avocado salad in a creamy kewpie (Japanese mayo) dressing. It wasn’t as spicy or highly seasoned as some I’ve had on the Islands, but tasty just the same and a sizeable portion. At this point, I decided it would be prudent to try a sushi roll, considering that’s why most people come to sushi restaurants. I set my sights on the Hisui Special Roll, packed with real crab, spicy tuna, cream cheese, ahi tuna, salmon, yellowtail, masago and tempura flakes—a spectacular visual and classic umami flavor profile. Talk about a perfect ending to a “light” sushi lunch. Domo arigato!

taste GRILLED HERB-STUFFED PORK SKEWERS WITH BAY LEAVES Flavors of Sicily by Ursula Ferrigno; photography by David Munns (Ryland Peters & Small, 2016, $24.95, rylandpeters.com) This recipe hails from the San Domenico Palace Hotel in Taormina—the chef, Massimo Mantarro, was persuaded to jot down the bones of this recipe. I think you’ll agree that it’s simple and very tasty. • 3-1/2 oz. pancetta, smoked or unsmoked, diced • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 1 extra large egg • 2 tbsp. fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped • 1 thick slice of country-style bread, soaked in warm water for 10 minutes and squeezed dry • 1 lb. 10 oz. pork loin, cut into 12 thin slices • 2-inch squares of country bread • Approximately 36 fresh bay leaves • 7 tbsp. olive oil • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • 6 skewers

Food and Beer for the Season KNEE DEEP BREAKING BUD IPA Knee Deep Brewing Company was founded in 2010 by brewmaster Jeremy Warren. From humble beginnings in Nevada, followed by a stint in Lincoln, the brewery has finally planted roots in a 28,000-square-foot facility in Auburn. With 14 year-round offerings—including the beloved Citra Pale Ale and Hoptologist DIPA—along with seasonal beers and special releases, visitors flock to their tasting room…sipping big, hoppy, West Coast-style suds while catching a glimpse of brewery operations (currently headed by Dean Roberts). Over the years, they’ve garnered multiple awards—quickly gaining a reputation for producing creatively brewed craft beers. Knee Deep Breaking Bud IPA features the typical bitterness and alcohol (6.7 percent ABV) of a classic IPA, with refreshing tropical fruit flavors, such as passion fruit and mango, plus aromas of Mosaic. Simcoe, CTZ, flaked wheat and a malt bill with a pinch of crystal malt are also in the mix, resulting in an easy-drinking beer that’s loaded with character, crispness and plenty of flavor complexity. When paired with the Grilled Herb-Stuffed Pork Skewers, it’s a mouthwatering match. —Richard Righton, Owner, 36 Handles Pub & Eatery

Barb Poteet, Clinic Supervisor

THE NATURAL PET TOOTH FAIRY Mobile clinics in Folsom and Roseville 888-508-9904 naturalpettoothfairy.com

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? I would like to say the travel industry found me, but that’s really not the case. In the ’80s, after I finished travel school, every travel agency was looking for an agent with three to five years of experience, and it was very hard to land my first job! What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience? Prior to travel school, I worked in accounting/payroll and learned early on that you should never spend more than you earn. Where do you go when the going gets tough? I go for a long run followed by a nice long rest in the sauna. What’s your biggest job perk? Each day is different and filled with fascinating people, challenges, great rewards and the ever-present promise of future travel and adventures. What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? Early Toast for brunch and Aji Japanese Bistro for dinner. Where do you and your family go locally to have fun? Mountain biking around the lake. What’s your favorite childhood memory? I grew up in a small town in Hungary where crime was a nonissue; we were able to play with the neighborhood kids for long hours in the fields or in the snow. If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why? My grandfather. He came to the U.S. from Hungary numerous times to work on the railroad. What’s your favorite local business other than your own? Adagio for Hair. And finally, customer service is…? Our business is based on relationships, and customer service is the key to building lasting ones. Our first goal is to align our clients with the right product; then we can go the extra mile to deliver an incredible and seamless vacation. At the end, we want our clients to have that “wow experience!”

Photos by Dante Fontana.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? We provide a unique veterinary service in non-anesthetic teeth cleaning for dogs and cats. By integrating the use of animal behavior techniques, soothing music and relaxing aromatherapy, we help prevent periodontal disease and keep the heart, liver and kidney healthy. Our safer, more affordable method of pet dental care eliminates the dangers of anesthesia. My love of animals and professional experience in holistic health collided when I started praying for a purposeful life and was given this opportunity with The Natural Pet Tooth Fairy. It’s a blessing to experience—on a daily basis—the joy of clients and pets benefiting from our services. What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience? My first job was working with holistic doctors. I learned the importance of a proactive health approach in preventing problems versus treating disease after it occurs. Why is your staff the best in the business? Our five-star customer rating speaks for itself! We’ve chosen people with a great love and passion for animals. They’re not only qualified and highly trained, but also able to maintain a calm demeanor while working with animals. What life accomplishments are you most proud of? When I see the standards I’ve set forth in working hard— living with integrity and maintaining strong values—reflected in my nine-year-old daughter. Where do you go when the going gets tough? I find my strength in prayer. God has carried our family through fierce storms and given us victories over seemingly impossible circumstances. What’s your favorite local business other than your own? Western Feed and Pet Supply—they’re friendly and knowledgeable and carry premium brand dog food. And finally, customer service is…? Our number one goal. We honor the trust our clients place in us with their pets.

17 “Unofficial” Baseball Fan Etiquette Rules by Tom Mailey share them now, along with a few of my own and from friends, including my radio co-host Pat, who loves b a s e b a l l m o re th a n P a b l o Sandoval’s belt loves a day off. 1/Never get up during an at-bat for any reason, other than to cheer. Your braut, your beer, the bathroom...they all can wait. 2/If you’ve just gone out for one of the aforementioned reasons, wait for a break in the action before returning to your seat.

82 stylefedh.com - July 2016

11/At all costs, avoid swearing. C’mon. There are kids. 12/Speaking of swearing, please put your #%*$ cell phone away. 13/Don’t taunt, or worse, try to pick fights with fans cheering for the other team. All you’re doing is representing your team in the worst way possible. 14/Summarizing the four previous rules: Don’t be an obnoxious #ss.

4/Do not do “the wave.” And finally: 5/Especially do not try to start “the wave.” 6/Also, don’t try being a cheerleader. It’s great to be enthusiastic, but please direct all shouting toward the field of play and not me, seven rows back. I paid to watch a game, not get yelled at by you. 7/Not every hard hit ball in the air is “OUTTA HERE!” Make your predictions by watching the outfielders. If they look like they’re gonna make a catch, they probably will.

15/If you catch a foul ball, or a player tosses one into the stands and there is a kid nearby…strongly consider giving it to the kid. 16/If you have a kid at home you want to bring the ball back to, totally cool. We get it. So announce it loudly and hope the other fans believe you.

8/It’s okay to shout at the umpire. If a missed call at home warrants it, boo away. Remind him that you noticed he forgot his glasses. But don’t lose your mind. All you’ll do is risk a stroke, and anyway, ultimately...? Blue. Don’t. Care.

17/OK, fine. If you snag a home run ball, you can hang onto that one. The strongly principled may still seek out a young nearby fan to give it to...unless that ball was hit by, say, Buster Posey. Then it’s totally fine to say, “Sorry kid, get your own.” Hey, we can’t let them grow up just expecting everything to be handed to them.

9/Don’t repeatedly yell at a player at bat to “get a hit.” That is exactly what Josh Reddick is trying to do. Same with pitchers and throwing strikes.

I

was at a River Cats game recently and saw something that disturbed me. A player walking off the field made eye contact with a kid in the stands. The little guy was wearing a big, oversized mitt and since the player had a ball in his hand, he tossed it toward the kid. Suddenly, from a good five seats away, a middle-aged woman, armed with a glove of her own (and surprisingly quick reflexes) leapt up, got her mitt in front of the kid’s, and made the snag. My first thought: She just wanted to make sure he gets the ball. Uh-uh. She kept it. SHE KEPT THE BALL. Now, maybe she didn’t know any better, but to me—and several others nearby—it was a clear violation of proper baseball fan etiquette. So, I have labored a good...oh, a good 20 minutes now...researching what exactly i s c o n s i d e r e d p ro p e r fan etiquette at baseball games. And while there doesn’t seem to be one set of hard-and-fast “official” rules, there are several common denominators FOR MORE TOM’S TAKES, shared by the two or three VISIT STYLEFEDH.COM. lists I painstakingly Googled WHAT’S COMING (including oneworldsports. 3/Never wear the jersey of a team that’s not playing in the game. At a Dodgers-Giants game, nobody cares you’re an über-Marlins fan. The likely impression you’ll actually make? That you don’t know much about baseball, heard you were going to a game, and simply grabbed the first ballgame-y shirt you could find.

10/Cheer your guys with passion and jeer the other guys all you want. But, try to be creative. Shouting empty-headed epithets like, “Hey Kershaw, you SUCK!” is just lazy and sad. Heck, you don’t even have to shout: Think of all those genius Hunter Pence signs—”Hunter Pence Hoards Garden Gnomes”; “Hunter Pence Thinks Game of Thrones Is Just OK.” They are funny and get the message across that he’s in enemy territory.
